Good evening everyone! We have had a busy, productive week so far. We hope to continue this was the week goes on. Here is a peek into our classroom this week: Reading: We are in the sixth week of unit 4. Therefore, this week is an inquiry week. We have been working online on Wonders to complete our project this time around. The topic is bullying. After we have researched and developed some background on the topic we will be creating a fictional narrative about a student that gets bullied and how they handle the situation. I think this is a great topic for the class to research and become more familiar with various coping strategies. Spelling: No spelling this week. Math: In math, we are continuing to work on addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. We are doing well with the concept so far this week. We are trying to remember to be careful by checking our answers for reasonableness and a label. Social Studies: In social studies, we will be beginning our journey through the South Eastern region. Today we began by completing the geography challenge to familiarize ourselves with the states and major landmarks in the area. On Thursday, we will start our next batch of slides;. These slides will have notes that will provide the students with a little more guidance in their note taking. This should better prepare them for their assessment at the end of our journey. Language: In writing this week we will be analyzing persuasive essays as we prepare to write our own next week on space exploration. Grammar: Our focus this week continues to be on different types of nouns. Important Days: March: March 20 - Will James Choir will be performing for us! Tuesday: Crazy Shoe or Sock Day Wednesday: Animal Print Day Thursday: Comfy Sweats Day Friday: Arrowhead Spirit Day IMPORTANT: Wednesday, March 1 we will be completing NEAP Testing. It is crucial that everyone is in attendance this day. Here is a look at our week: Reading: In reading, we are focusing our attention on how to explain what you see in the sky. This will be the focus of all of our readings over the course of the week. We will be using a comprehension skill and a comprehension strategy to help us navigate through the various expository texts. The skill is Cause and Effect. We will be analyzing the text for various relationships within our reading. The strategy is asking and answering questions. This is an important strategy because it allows us to think deeper as the reader. Language: In language, we will be looking at Green and Latin roots, Also, we will be finishing our fictional pieces and sharing them with our peers this Friday. Spelling: Diphthongs /oi/ and /ou/ (Unit 4 Week 4) Math: In math we are finishing up equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and creating common denominators. On Tuesday we will be completing a serious of review games for half of our math hour. Followed by some review work in our books. Our chapter 6 test will be on Wednesday. Social Studies: In social studies on Tuesday we will be finishing up our slides on chapter 4. We will be having our chapter 4 test on Thursday. I will NOT be sending home a study guide. The student will use their notes from chapter 4 to take their assessment. Please bring in your recording sheets for Big Sky Fit Kids on Wednesday. I will return them that afternoon! 2016-17 Memory Book order forms have gone home and are due March 7th. You can order online at ybpay.lifetouch.com ID # 6643317. Good morning! Here is a look into our week: Reading: In reading we will be working on two skills. The first will be predictions. We will practice making predictions and then confirming or revising our predictions based on what we have read in the story. The second will be point of view. We are looking to determine whether the narrator of the story is a first person or third person. For first person, we look for words like I, me, and my. Also, we check to see if the character telling the story is actually in the story. For third person, we are looking for an outside person telling the story. We will get to know all the characters and their thoughts are available to us. We often see names rather than pronouns. Spelling: Unit 4 Week 3 Math: In math we are continuing with fractions. We are shifting away from creating equivalent fractions and moving towards comparing and ordering fractions. We are using many different strategies to meet our goals. From fractions strips to common denominators, the students are finding their own ways to be successful. Writing: In writing we are continuing on our fictional pieces. Everyone has created a plan and started drafting their pieces. We should be finishing up our drafts by Friday and will use next week to peer conference and revise our work. Montana History: Our focus is continuing to be on Native Americans. We have examined the importance of the bison. There was never one part of the bison that was wasted. It all had a use. Next, we will be looking at Tribal life in the 1700s. Social Studies: We are finishing up our slides for chapter 4 this week. They are turning out really nicely. Next week we will be shifting our attention to the states and capitols in the Northeast Region. Important Notes:

Additionally, if you have taken school related pictures and would like to submit them for consideration for the Memory Book, please send them to [email protected]. Thank you! Good afternoon! I am sorry this is late. we have had an interesting day today! My guest teacher was sick, and long story short... the kiddos have had myself and two other teachers today! :) They are resilient, though.
Reading: In reading this week we are focusing on why people run for public office. We are reading two different stories that are helping us make predictions. We are working on confirming or revising our predictions we are making as a whole group and in our small groups. Also, we are identifying first and third person narratives. We are looking for clues in the text to help us determine the point of view of the story. Math: In math this week we have been focusing on finding common denominators and creating equivalent fractions. We are using multiples to determine common multiples. Common multiples help us determine a common denominator between the pair of fractions. On Thursday, we will do an understanding check using the mid-chapter checkpoint. This will help guide our learning for the next week in math. Language: In writing, we are continuing to share our animal expository pieces with the class. We have been working very hard to produce a quality text, and we are proud of the work we have done. On Friday, we will begin our narrative or fictional story on to switch things up from our typical writing prompt. In grammar, we are focusing on how to correct and identify Run-On sentences. Spelling: Unit 4 Week 2: Inflectional Endings: y to i. Social Studies: In Social Studies we did an assembly line as if we were working at one of the early Hersey's Chocolate factory. They had to take on the role of Wrapper Cutter, Candy Placer, and Candy Wrapper. This was a fun experience for students to work through. On Thursday, we will be continuing with our slides. This week: Mid-terms are this Friday. Please look for their mid-term handouts on Friday afternoon. Next Friday (February 24th) will be the last day missing assignments from the first 8 weeks of the 3rd quarter can be turned in. Almost all assignments can be found in parent resources. I will be gathering missing math assignments and sending home by this Friday (2/17). Also, on Friday, Box Tops are to be turned in!! Please helps support our school. Although this week is a short one, we have a lot we are going to get accomplished. Math: In math this week we are shifting over from division into fractions. (Side note: I was very proud of the progress we made in just a week with using the division algorithm. I was impressed with our tests!) Today we made fractions strips for a whole, halves, fourths, eighths, and sixteenths. These will become helpful was we are comparing fractions later in the chapter. Tuesday we will be investigating equivalent fractions. We will be looking into how we can use models to show equivalent, or equal, fractions. On Wednesday, we will be looking at how we can use multiplication to find equivalent fractions. Finally, on Thursday, we will then begin looking at simplest form. We will explore how to find the smallest equivalent fraction for each given fractions. Reading: Reading this week we are focusing on readers theater. The script is a western called Nat Love. Today we read through a portion of the script and choose our part. Tuesday we will practice our lines, and Wednesday we will present out readings to the class. Spelling: No spelling this week. Language/Writing: For writing on Wednesday we will be sharing our animal expository reports with the class. Students will either explain or read their work while pointing out the various text features they included in their work. For the language portion of the week, we will be focusing on the complete predicate. The predicate is what happened in the sentence. The complete predicate encompasses more than just the verb. Social Studies: In social studies, we will be reading at Hersey's Pennsylvania and gearing out for our assembly line next Tuesday! Montana History: We will be looking at the locations of the tribes located in Montana. This will begin our study of Native American Life from 1700 to the present. Thursday, February 9, is our Valentines Day Party. Please see the previous post for more details from Terra. Thank you for everyone that has volunteered their time and resources for our party this year! Lifetouch Class Photo flyer sent home today - If parents DO NOT want their child to have an individual photo on this day, they need to return the BLUE form signed. February: February 9 - Early Out, Dismissal at noon. February 10 - 13 - Winter Break, No School February 14 - School resumes February 16 - Coffee with the Principal (Please RSVP) February 17 - Box Tops Due; Mid-Terms February 21 - Class Picture Day! February 24 - Spirt Day - Flannel Friday Hello Parents,
Our classroom Valentine's Day party will take place on Thursday, February 9th from 10:30-12. Dismissal this day is at noon. Mrs. Cunningham has created a sign up sheet to bring items for the party. Please go to the Calendar tab in Freshschools to sign up. Thank you in advance for helping. As far as Valentine's boxes go, if your child would like to decorate a box or bag that is perfectly fine. I understand that family life can be very busy, so if this is something you or your child would prefer not to do, bags will be provided for them to decorate before the party. All items will need to be at the school by the morning of the 9th. Please don't bring your Valentine's boxes (if creating one)before the 9th as classroom space is limited. Thank you I have attached a class list of the students and some specialists. Please make sure all students receive a Valentine, but the specialists are optional. Some students names will need their last initial because of duplicated names. We have a fun day planned for the kids and hope they enjoy themselves! Feel free to email if you have any questions Terra Scherr Marissa: Please check the parent resources for a list of students. I decided to enroll our class in Big Sky Fit Kids this year. This is a program that helps to motivate children to stay active and to eat healthy! Our class is a very active bunch, from PEAK to sports and activities outside of school (basketball, skating, soccer, karate, sledding, etc.). I thought this would be a good opportunity to maximize the activity we already complete daily while incorporating a healthy diet.
A parent letter from Big Sky Fit Kids is located in the Parent Resources tab and will give you a little more information. Today in the Tuesday Envelops a tracking sheet for Big Sky Fit Kids was sent home. It includes space to track for the months of February and March. Simply, log your daily fruits and vegetables with the time spend being active. (PE and recess do not count towards these totals and I have talked about this in class). Towards the end of the month, I will send out a reminder to return your recording sheets to school. This will allow me time to enter in our information online to see how we are stacking up with other schools and classes in the state. This, of course, is optional. However, I strongly encourage you to support you child through the challenge! Thank you for your consideration. I know the students are very excited about the program. Please contact me if you have any further questions. Good afternoon and Happy Sunday. I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!
We have a full week of learning ahead of us. Math: In math, we are beginning to get a good grasp on the division algorithm. (This is the way we adults were taught!) We spent four days gaining an understanding of how to use the equation for division. On Monday, we will continue to explore the algorithm to gain an even deeper understanding of the strategy. On Tuesday, we will be looking at multistep division problems. Wednesday will be spent reviewing, studying, and practicing division. And then, finally, we will have our division test on Thursday morning. Reading: In reading this week we are moving into Unit 4. Our focus of this first week is on Why do we need government? As we are reading and learning about the importance of government, we will be focusing on asking and answering questions related to our readings and cause and effect. Spelling: In spelling, we will be in Unit 4 Week 1. Montana History: In Montana History this week we will be looking at the Crow Flag and analyzing the seal. We will end the week with comparing the Montana Flag to the Crow Flag. Social Studies: In Social Studies we will continue to work on our slides for chapter 4. This week we will be taking a stop in Pennsylvania and taking a stop at the Hersey's Factory to give a go at an assembly line. Writing: In writing, we will being our peer conferences. Each student will fill out a sheet to jot notes on as they evaluate partners work and suggest improvements. The week will wrap up with small group conferences. During these conferences, I will be going over the requirements and helping the students with any last minute changes. My hope is to have these all completed and turned in this Friday.
