Good evening everyone! I hope you had a great Monday off and are ready for four full days of learning!
Reading: In reading, we are focusing on how inventions can help solve problems. As we read through various genres (expository and biographies) we will be using a comprehension skill and strategy to help us understand the text at a deeper level. The skill for the week is looking at problem solution relationships, and the strategy is summarizing. We are focusing on being able to summarize a piece in two sentences or less.
Math: In math, we have begun chapter 10: Two-Dimensional Shapes. We are switching things up and moving away from fractions for a couple of chapters. Today we looked at lines, rays, and angles. Our two big focuses were on how we can write the line, ray, or angle and how to identify those different parts. Wednesday, we are looking at classifying triangles by their angles. Then on Thursday, we will be identifying parallel and perpendicular lines.
Spelling: Unit 5 Week 3: Vowel Teams
Language: In language, we will be continuing our persuasive essays. We are all working on different pieces of the process. Some of us are finishing up our research, others are working on the organization of our writing, and still others are gearing up to type their first draft. In grammar, we will be analyzing sentences for when words should be capitalized, and then on Friday, we will do a mixed review on the various types of nouns and capitalization.
Social Studies: In social studies, we are continuing our Chapter 6 slides on the South Eastern Region of the United States. Today we took a riverboat into the Gulf of Mexico to look at an Oil Rig off the coast of Louisiana. We learned how they drill the oil from the ocean and what the petroleum can be used for. Later this week we will be visiting A Cotton Plantation (6.9) and Montgomery, Alabama (6.10). This will lead up to us summarizing our learning and taking our chapter 6 test with the notes we took on our slides next week before break.
Montana History: Today in MT History we looked at the three goals Thomas Jefferson wanted Lewis and Clark to complete while on their journey to the land of the Louisiana Purchase. They were to draw sketches of new plants and animals they see, account for all the Native American tribes in the area and their populations, and find the North West Passage to allow for better trade opportunities.
