Good evening everyone. Here is a look at the rest of our week: Reading: In reading, we are focusing on what you can discover when you look closely at something? The skills and strategy we are working on are summarizing and sequencing. We will be working on these comprehension techniques over the course of the week in small group and whole group reading. Math: In math, we are now in chapter 9. Chapter 9 is focused on converting fractions to decimals (Mainly focused on tenths and hundredths). This week we are looking at how we can create equivalent fractions for tenths and hundredths to help us convert the fraction into decimal form. We will also look at how fractions in tenths and hundredths relate to money. Finally, we will be adding fractional parts of tenths and hundredths. We will be combining many of the skills we have learned this week and last during this lesson. The chapter 9 test will be next Tuesday. Good morning!
I have not done well since the New Year about posting to our blog. I apologize for that. MONDAY, January 15, there will be NO SCHOOL. We, the teachers, have training that we will be attending. TUESDAY, January 16, we will begin our NWEA Math test. I did not want to do it the day after a break, but it is the only day that works with our schedule. Please make sure your student gets a good nights sleep and has breakfast in the morning before school on Tuesday! I am truly excited for them to show me what they have learned so far this year in math. Weekly Overview: Math: We will be beginning Chapter 6 on Equivalent Fractions. I am very excited to get this chapter started. Our beginning focus will be on the vocabulary associated with fractions. Next, we will spend some time exploring and talking about what equivalent fractions are. Finally, we will be using pattern blocks to explore how shapes can be made with other shapes.. For example, a trapezoid can be made by using four triangles. A triangle would be 1/4 of a trapezoid. Reading: In reading our focus is on how one person can make a difference. We will explore different readings about people and characters that have made a difference in their communities. Our comprehension strategy will be rereading. This will ensure we understand some of the more difficult concepts that we will be reading about this week. Our comprehension skill will be point of view. Point of view goes beyond first or third person. We really want to be able to dig in and know what the author's thoughts on the subject are or what their opinion of the overall topic is. Writing: In writing, we have finished our animal research. We are now going to be exploring informational writing. We will look at the structure and learn how to write an information piece effectively. We will look at different example to be able to determine what good informational writing looks like. Social Studies: In social studies, we be beginning chapter 6 on the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States. We will have a state and capital test on Friday, January 19. I have sent home an example of the test with the students. For the test, students will need to be able to locate the state on the map (of ONLY the Northeastern States) and label the capital that corresponds to that state. I will provide the students with a word bank that includes the states and capitals. Spelling: Soft C and Soft G January Dates: January 15 - No School January 16 - NWEA Math Test at 8:30 January 17 - SRI Test January 19 - Mrs. Cunningham will be in Great Falls for basketball February Dates: February 1 - Skate Night at 5 PM February 2 - Backpack Jersey Day - bring $1 or more for the Backpack Program February 9 - 12: No School February 20 - Class Picture Day February 21 - Box Tops Due February 28 - Last day of 2nd Trimester Good evening everyone!
I apologize for the late weekly blog (and for not blogging last week). Here is a peek into what is left of our week: Reading/Writing/Language: In reading, we are in the final week of unit 2. Our focus is solely on inquiry. We are researching sharks to learn about their habitat, hunting habits, and threats. We have been evaluating sources for credibility and reliability. We learned how to use skimming and scanning to help with this. We then took notes on the articles we determined were reliable. We will then create a presentation on slides to present to small groups in class. This inquiry project is getting us ready for our animal expository reports. We choose our animal today and began research during library time. We will continue to work on researching this week, and finish up our research next week. We will then be ready to begin writing our five-paragraph essay on our animals. Math: In math, we are continuing to work through division. We are learning a variety of different strategies, including estimating, dividing using the distributive property, and checking our quotients with multiplication. We will continue to work our way towards the standard algorithm next week and into the beginning of the new year. Social Studies: This week we will be visiting our Nations Capital and New York City. This will lead us to the end of chapter 4 and the Northeast region of the United States. Montana History: I would like to extend a thank you to all of you that were able to donate time and supplies to our Montana birthday celebration. We couldn't do it without your help! In Montana history this week, we are creating a study guide for the state symbols. We will take a short quiz on next Tuesday (December 19) to test our knowledge of what we have been learning in Montana History. The quiz will be fill-in the blank with a word bank (however, the word bank will have extra words). Look for a study guide to come home tomorrow! This week: - On Friday, I will be out of school for our first away basketball game. We will be in Casper, Wyoming. Please do not hesitate to get ahold of me by email if you need anything. Next week: -On Monday, we will be taking the first of two NWEA winter test. We will take the reading test Monday morning. Please make sure your student gets a good nights rest and gets a good breakfast! (We will take the NWEA math test after we return from break). -Friday, December 22, is our last day of school before we let out for a break. (School Resumes January 3, 2018). Good evening! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving.
Report cards go home Friday, December 1st! Our week: In reading, we are entering Unit 2 Week 4. Our focus is what helps animals survive. The comprehension strategies and skills we will be working on are summarizing and main idea and details. We will use these two methods to aid our comprehension as we read expository texts this week. We will be reading Animal Adaptations, Spiders, and Extreme Animals. Math: In math, we are continuing to focus on factors and multiples. We will review factors, multiples, common multiples, and number patterns on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will take our chapter 5 test. On Friday, we will begin our chapter on division. This is a difficult topic. Please be sure to continue to practice multiplication facts. This will be a great help as we move to division. Montana History: In social studies, we will be finishing up the state symbols with the state dinosaur. We will then begin to review all of the state symbols. We will have a state symbols quiz next week. Social Studies: In social studies this week, we will be visiting Boston, Massachusetts, and the Erie Canal. Language: In language, we will be studying compound predicates and begin our inquiry project on sharks. This will lead us to our expository writing piece. Next Week: December 7: Barnes and Noble Night 4:00-8:00 TOYS for TOTS collection starts NOW and runs through December 8! Good morning!
We have a short week packed with learning at Arrowhead! Reading: In reading, we are finishing up Unit 2 Week 3. Our focus is how are all living things connected? Today we will read about Energy in the Ecosystem. We learned about the food chain and how everything in an ecosystem is connected (including the SUN!). We are also reading about Thanksgiving and Pumpkin Pie to learn about the origins of these traditions. The students are also excited to explore some common myths associated with Thanksgiving. They will be excited to share these with you tomorrow. Math: In math last week we began chapter 5: factors and multiples. Today we will be working on understanding the difference between factors and multiples. Factors are the two numbers used to get a product. (2X3=6, 2 and 3 are factors of 6). Multiples are similar to skip counting. (The first five multiples of 6 are: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30...). We will finish up the week by exploring prime and composite numbers. Montana History: In social studies, we are finishing up the state gemstone of Montana, the agate. Important this week: No school, Wednesday, November 22nd to Friday, November 24th. (School will resume Monday, November 27th). December Dates: December 1: Report cards sent home. December 7: Barnes and Noble Night 4:00-8:00 TOYS for TOTS collection starts NOW and runs through December 8! December 15: K-3 Christmas Program for Parents at 8:45 to 9:15. |
